Why You Need A Word of the Year & How to Pick One

Why You Need A Word of the Year & How to Pick One | Women's Wellness Planner Blog

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Welcome to the last day of 7 Ways to Start 2017 Right! We are so excited that you joined us for this whole series, and are even more excited about what you are going to achieve in 2017!!

So far this week we’ve reviewed 2016, written SMART goals and affirmations, found our support system, and practiced self-care. You can read the entire series HERE. Today, we are kicking off the first day of the year by chatting about why you need a personal Word of the Year.

A personal Word of the Year is a word that you pick to focus on all year. It should inspire you, challenge you, and, of course, remind you to stay on track with your goals. Like your affirmations, your Word of the Year should be powerful and positive.

When thinking about what word you will pick, I find it’s easiest to look at all of your goals for the year. Is there a theme? Something common among them all? Is there a word that will encourage you as you strive for those goals? These are good options for your word of the year.

For instance, my goals are mostly focused on feeling more confident in my skills and building habits, so my words (yes, I am choosing two this year!) for 2017 are “Confident” and “Consistent.” I’m incorporating them into my affirmations too - “I am unique, and amazing, and confident in my knowledge, skills and expertise.” and “I am consistent in all aspects of my life. I find happiness is my routines.”

But why should you have a Word of the Year? Great question! Your Word of the Year is there to help you stay focused on your goals. It is there to inspire you to keep going. When you feel like quitting, when you feel like there’s no way, go to your Word of the Year. Read it to yourself - preferably out loud. Repeat several times. Really feel it in your bones. Grab your affirmations, read them to yourself. Again, out loud and repeatedly.

Now, just a reminder, affirmations and special words are just some of our tools for helping us achieve our dreams and focus on the positives (not magic pills). You still need to do the work. My habits won’t build themselves without me taking action. I won’t become confident overnight because I read my word of the year. I need to be taking steps to improve myself and realize my awesomeness. The same goes for you.

Achieving great things is possible! But you will have to work for it. You have to be willing to take steps every day to make your dreams reality. Over the past week, we’ve given you some incredible tools to do that. We’ll continue giving you tools throughout the year, right here on the blog and on instagram and are looking forward to being here for you every step of the way!

Now it’s time for you to go to work. Put all of your ideas in motion and kick some booty!! You are woman, hear you roar! Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve everything you are dreaming - especially yourself. We believe in you and love you so hard. Now, GO ROCK 2017!!!
